Guide

What are order SMS notifications and OTP verification?

Order SMS notifications automatically send the customer short messages about order status; OTP verification confirms the phone number with a one-time code. One informs, the other verifies.

Used together they reduce bad numbers and make order tracking easier.

What is OTP verification?

OTP means One-Time Password — a single-use verification code. The customer enters a phone number during checkout; the system sends a short-lived code and the customer enters it to prove they can receive messages on that number.

  1. 01

    Phone number

    05XX XXX XX XX

  2. 02

  3. 03

    Customer enters the code

The code is typed on screen

  4. 04

    Number verified

    The order continues securely

The code becomes invalid after a set time or after too many failed attempts.

Order SMS

How do order SMS notifications work?

Order SMS messages are triggered automatically by order status. The business chooses when SMS is sent and what the message says.

  1. Received

Your order #1842 was received. Preparation has started.

  2. Preparing

    Your order is being prepared.

  3. On the way

Your order is on the way. It will arrive shortly.

  4. Delivered

    Your order was delivered. Enjoy!

Customers no longer need to call the restaurant just to learn where their order is.

Flow

How does it work?

Phone verification and SMS notifications typically follow these steps.

  1. 1

    Customer enters a phone number

A reachable number is collected during ordering.

  2. 2

    Number is normalised

The phone number is converted to a standard format.

  3. 3

    OTP is sent

A one-time code is sent via the selected SMS/OTP provider.

  4. 4

    Customer enters the code

Expiry and attempt limits are checked.

  5. 5

    Phone is verified

On success the order flow continues.

  6. 6

    Order SMS messages are sent

Automatic SMS goes out at key stages.

Components

Components of an SMS notification system

The parts a business can control.

Notification triggers

Automatic SMS when an order is received, preparing or on the way.

Message templates

Order number, customer name or ETA can be inserted automatically.

Sender name

A sender header so the SMS shows your brand on the phone.

Delivery report

Track whether sent SMS messages were delivered.

Timing rules

Rules to avoid unnecessary SMS late at night.

Security limits

Cooldown, request limits and failed-attempt caps prevent abuse.

Infrastructure

How SMS providers are used

Local services like NetGSM or international ones like Twilio and Telnyx can be chosen. The goal is a reliable SMS stack that fits the business.

For OTP you can use the provider’s verification service or let the platform manage the code.

Security

Security and abuse controls

OTP is more than sending a code. These controls reduce SMS bombing and automated abuse.

OTP protection

  • Cooldown
  • Rate limit
  • Attempt limit
  • Expiry

Cooldown

A short wait applies before a new code can be requested.

Request limit

Excess OTP requests to the same number or IP are capped.

Attempt limit

Unlimited guessing of the wrong code is blocked.

Code expiry

OTP automatically expires after a set time.

Practice

Best practices

To get good results from SMS and OTP:

  • Keep OTP codes short and easy to enter.
  • Do not make code validity too long.
  • Limit back-to-back code sends.
  • Send order SMS only when it truly helps.
  • Include useful details such as the order number.
  • Monitor SMS delivery rates regularly.
  • Support correct phone number formats for international customers.
  • Treat marketing SMS separately from operational alerts.

Distinction

Operational SMS and marketing SMS are not the same

Operational SMS

“Your order 3201 is being prepared.”

Operational ≠ Marketing

Marketing SMS

“20% off pizzas this weekend!”

The first message is part of the order flow. The second is marketing and must be handled under consent and preference rules.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long is an OTP code valid?

The code is valid for a short time. When it expires or too many wrong attempts are made, a new code must be requested.

Is OTP required?

No. OTP depends on the business configuration. When enabled, phone verification runs before the order.

Can OTP be sent repeatedly to the same number?

It should not be unlimited. Cooldown and request limits are applied to prevent abuse.

Is OTP required for order SMS?

No. They are independent features. OTP verifies the phone; order SMS informs about status.

Which SMS providers are supported?

Providers such as NetGSM, Twilio and Telnyx can be used. The setup depends on the business SMS and OTP configuration.

Can marketing messages also be sent by SMS?

Technically the SMS stack can carry marketing messages, but consent, preferences and legal requirements must be handled separately. See restaurant SMS and email marketing.
